Nevada Citizenship Award:

We are excited to announce the 4th Grade Nevada Citizenship Award at Kitty Ward! It is intended to encourage our fourth grade students to learn more about the state in which they live. We hope that the interest shown and knowledge gained by each student will indeed help them to be a better Nevada citizen.

Nevada Citizenship Award Details

 This is a self-guided activity.  Although some of the projects are required for credit as classroom assignments, completion of each requirement to fulfill the requirements of the Nevada Citizenship Award is optional. Once completed students will be honored with a Certificate of Completion documenting their knowledge of Nevada studies.  Certificates will be awarded to eligible participants on a date to be determined later in the school year.  Students must schedule a time at the teachers discretion to be able to present at least one but not more than two requirements during the presentation.  All six required presentations of the specific criteria must be completed no later than May 18, 2018.   

To earn this award each student must fulfill the following requirements:

1.    State Song

The student will need to sing, say, or draft in writing from memory the entire state song.  Only two errors or teacher assistance requests are allowed.

2.    Native Americans

Each student will need to correctly label and spell the seventeen counties on a blank map of Nevada. (Teacher can provide map.)   Only two errors or teacher assistance requests are allowed.

3. County Map

Each student will need to correctly label and spell the name and location of the five historical Native American tribes on a blank map of Nevada.  (Teacher can provide map if needed.)  No errors or assistance is allowed.

4.    Nevada Preamble

Each student will need to recite or draft in writing from memory the Preamble to the Nevada State Constitution.  No errors or assistance can be allowed.

6. Creative Project

Students will choose ONE from of the project options to synthesize what they have learned about Nevada over the year: Choose your own idea or adapt any of the ideas listed, just be sure to get prior approval from your teacher before beginning the project.  At the end of the year all of the projects that the students made will be displayed in our Nevada Museum.

• Cut from magazines or print out from Internet, pictures of five or more different types of workers who could be employed in Nevada. Prepare a visual display with a “job description” of each (i.e., qualifications, description of job, etc.).
• Conduct an oral interview with a Native Nevadan.  Make a presentation board outlining how Nevada has changed while this person lived here.  
• Make a fact cube (illustrations and words covering a box) with what you think are the most important facts to know about Nevada.
• Make a large jigsaw puzzle of Nevada’s counties.  Be sure to label the county seat and some interesting facts about each county on each puzzle piece.
• Design and make a board game on information about Nevada.  Don’t forget instructions on how to play the game!
• Create a timeline of people, places, and events in Nevada’s History.
• Make a model of the strip or Hoover Dam out of any material you can think of.  Please include information on the history of the location and some interesting facts about it.
• Make models of eight of the Nevada symbols (or put them all together to make a collage or quilt).  You can use clay, Legos, fabric, or whatever materials you want!  Don’t forget to label each of these eight models: animal, bird, tree, flower, flag, metal, rock, and fish.
• Study a famous Nevadan.  Write a report or design a presentation board on his/her contributions to Nevada.
• Select a route used by the pioneers to travel to or through Nevada.  Create a travel brochure, which includes maps and pictures that may characterize what the pioneer may see while traveling this route.
• Illustrate in large-scale drawing, the major methods of transportation during the Westward Movement.  Write a brief description of each.
• Identify minerals that are mined in Nevada.  Write/illustrate a description showing where the natural resources are mined and how the products are used to help us every day.
• Create and illustrate a fictional story depicting the everyday life of a Mountain Man/Explorer.  Include pictures and written descriptions of dress, foods, types of recreation, etc. (Be sure to research your facts before you write the historical fiction story).
